Memtech Proudly Sponsors Blue Team in the DARPA 2005 Grand
Challenge
Posted on Fri, June 17, 2005
This "Grand Challenge" is intended to accelerate the
development of autonomous vehicle technologies. DARPA and
other US agencies are already funding numerous developments
in the robotics vehicle domain. This specific endeavor,
however, is targeted to find smart solutions that are to be
tested in a realistic scenario under challenging race
conditions - something that has never been done before on
this scale.
In July 2002, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency (DARPA) announced that it would award a cash prize of
$1 Million to the team that builds an autonomous robotic
ground vehicle that will successfully win a race from Los
Angeles to Las Vegas.
On March 13, 2004, the Grand Challenge took place with no
vehicles completing more than 8 miles autonomously before
being disqualified. Nevertheless, the event successfully
created a community of engineers, garage enthousihast and
students who together took the first steps in private
autonomous vehicle development.
There was no winner March 13, 2004. So, DARPA decided to
hold a new Grand Challenge on October 8th, 2005 with a $2
million prize.

Memtech's drives take a beating
Posted on Wed, Feb 23, 2005
Inside Bay Area - Business News
IT'S THE
FLASH DRIVE'S equivalent of the black box.
Beat it up, freeze it, or burn
it — the data inside remains unharmed.
Livermore-based Memtech has
made its mark by developing flash memory drives that can
stand up to the most rugged of conditions.
"The key to our products is
making sure none of the data gets lost, regardless of the
conditions," said Larry Schuster, vice president of Memtech.
"You can literally run over the drives with a car, and they
will manage just fine."
A flash memory card is a device
that plugs into a computer and functions as a portable
storage device. Some of Memtech's drives can store up to 60
gigabytes of information. The drives start at about $1,000.

War bolsters businesses
By Ellen Lee, CONTRA
COSTA TIMES
Posted on Sun, Mar. 23, 2003
It all highlights the Bay
Area's vast and increasingly large role in the nation's
military affairs. The Defense Department has turned more and
more to commercial technology developed by Bay Area
high-tech firms, particularly as the boom of the late 1990s
improved the gathering, analyzing and viewing of
information. That, in turn, has been crucial for
recession-ravaged Bay Area technology companies, which have
seen few areas of growth recently.
"Silicon Valley needs to
reinvent itself after the dot-com crash," said Naval
Postgraduate School professor John Arquilla. "If they
redirect themselves, we will see the rise of the military
post-industrial complex."
The Persian Gulf War in 1991
featured Patriot missiles, and the 2001 war in Afghanistan
put attention on unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs. But the
United States' success could also depend largely on the
behind-the-scenes software and systems that disseminate
intelligence in rapid fire.
Much of that technology is
coming in some form from the Bay Area. In the past decade,
the government has moved from building its own technology to
buying commercial technology created by companies that don't
necessarily specialize in the military industry.
...
"The advantage to the solider
is so enormous that it's worth doing," said Richard Muller,
a UC Berkeley physics professor and consultant for the
Department of Defense. "It's really a first time. That's
going to be brand new here, and we'll see how well it
works."
U.S. troops are also better
equipped, using rugged laptops outfitted down to the
hardiest chips, to process that data.
Livermore's Memtech, founded by
a former Intel employee, makes disk drives that can
withstand the Persian Gulf's sand storms and heat. Unlike
typical disk drives, which involve a platter that rotates as
the computer looks for information, Memtech's incorporate
flash media made by Toshiba and SanDisk Corp. in Sunnyvale.
The result means that the disk drives, installed onto
laptops and other computer equipment made by Lockheed Martin
and L-3 Communications, as well as other major U.S. military
contractors, can withstand dust, sand, strong motions and
temperatures between 24.8 degrees and 185 degrees
Fahrenheit.
